Arkley

A windmill, a golf course, and a wartime listening station at Arkley View.

The name Arkley is first recorded as Arkleyslond in 1332, from Old English words for a chest or receptacle and a woodland clearing. Arkley Windmill was operating as a working corn windmill by 1806 and appeared on 1860s Ordnance Survey maps; it stopped working during the First World War and was restored, though not returned to operation, in 1930. Arkley Golf Club was founded in 1909 on a course designed by James Braid and Harry Vardon, two of the sport's most influential names, and from 3 October 1940 the government's Radio Security Service ran a covert operation from Arkley View, a large house off Arkley Lane, under the cover address “PO Box 25 Barnet”.

The civil parish of Arkley was established in 1895, absorbed into Barnet Urban District in 1905, and abolished into the London Borough of Barnet in 1965; at no point in that history does the record show a market, a parade or a high street of any kind. At 482 feet above sea level, Arkley is among the highest points in London, which is a fact about its ground, not about its trade.

That combination, a windmill, a golf course and a former intelligence site rather than any shops, means Arkley's businesses are almost entirely home-based trades and small practices with nowhere for a customer to walk past and notice them. A search is not a secondary route to being found here; for most Arkley businesses it is the only one, which makes a plainly written, accurately located website the single most important piece of marketing available.

Where our Arkley customers work

If your work is right by the windmill or the golf club, the website says that specifically. If you cover the wider Arkley area, it says that instead.

Two ways to start in Arkley.

A professional website, or that website with ongoing SEO from the start. The website is built to the same standard whichever route you take.

Eighteen months, then the website is yours.

Arkley Windmill and Arkley Golf Club were both built to last for generations. A website that only ever rents itself back to you monthly doesn't match that kind of staying power. Complete the minimum term here and it belongs to you, whether you stay with PrimeStart or not.

  1. Month 1 We design and build it

Your first £49.99 is taken at signup. We build the website around your business and you approve it before anything is published.

  2. Months 1 to 18 We host, manage and support it

Hosting, security, backups, updates and reasonable small changes, while you make the monthly payments. 18 payments of £49.99, £899.82 in total.

  3. After month 18 The website is yours

Complete the minimum term and the payments due under it, and the website belongs to you. It was built for your business, and it stays with your business.

  4. Your choice Stay, or move it

Stay with PrimeStart at £49.99 a month on a rolling basis with no new minimum term, or move the website to hosting of your own.

Moving the website elsewhere is subject to the third-party licences any website relies on, such as WordPress, plugins, fonts and stock photography. The full wording lives in the Website Subscription Terms.

Near the windmill or Arkley Golf Club, a search result is the shop window. There isn't another one.

“Handyman arkley”, “gardener en5”, “decorator near me”: every one of these is typed by someone who has no parade to walk along and no shopfront to notice. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches like these.

An illustration of the kind of local results SEO works towards. The businesses, ratings and positions shown are examples, not a ranking or a result for any particular business.

  1. 01
    “handyman Arkley

Made by a homeowner near the windmill or the golf club with no parade to check against, who needs real photographs of finished work to judge you by instead.

  2. 02
    “gardener EN5

Searched by someone on one of the larger plots near Arkley Golf Club who wants a business that plainly covers EN5, not a vague claim to cover the whole borough.

  3. 03
    “decorator near me

Typed by someone near the windmill or Arkley Lane, at one of London's highest, most sparsely commercial addresses, where a search result genuinely is the only shopfront available.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what customers in Arkley actually type. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

Arkley industries

Home-based trades decide the shape of the site. There is no parade to lead with instead.

A handyman working near Arkley Golf Club and a gardener working near the windmill need different websites, but both are found entirely by search, since Arkley has no shopping parade at all.

How it works

Your part is short.

Choose a plan, tell us about the business, review the draft. We do everything in between, and nothing is published until you approve it.

See the full process, start to finish

  1. 1

    Choose your plan

Pick Website or Website + SEO. Your first monthly payment is taken at signup.

  2. 2

    Tell us about the business

A short onboarding in your Client Platform: services, areas, anything you want highlighted, your logo, any photos and the number you want calls to go to.

  3. 3

    Ready to Build

We check we have what we need. If something's missing we'll say exactly what, and work with what you have where we can.

  4. 4

    First draft

You see a working draft of your site, on desktop and phone, and tell us what to change.

  5. 5

    Approve and launch

Reasonable in-scope revisions, then you approve it. Nothing goes live until you say so.

Timing, stated properly

We aim to have your first website draft ready within 5 working days once PrimeStart has everything needed and confirms your project is Ready to Build. Payment alone doesn’t start the clock; missing details, revisions or domain delays can extend it.

Before you approve

You review the draft and request reasonable in-scope changes. If there’s a genuine problem we can’t put right within scope after reasonable attempts, we can cancel the agreement and refund Website subscription payments made, subject to any disclosed non-recoverable third-party costs.

Questions

Questions from Arkley businesses

Do you work with businesses trading in Arkley?
Yes, for the handymen, gardeners, decorators and small practices working across Arkley, near the windmill and the golf club. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
Arkley doesn't have a shop or a high street. Does that matter for a website?
It changes what the website is for. No shopping parade was found in Arkley in research, so the site's whole job is to stand in for a shopfront that has never existed here: real photographs of finished work, plain wording on what you do, and a precisely named location, so a customer can judge you before you ever meet.
Is Arkley Golf Club connected to Graham Hill?
The course's own dedicated source records that a light aircraft piloted by the Formula One driver Graham Hill crashed there on 29 November 1975, killing all six people aboard. We state that only as a plain historical fact where relevant, never as page decoration.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you have now. A business near the windmill or Arkley Golf Club would be starting from the same place as everyone else here: a new site built around the trade, with the SEO work running from day one rather than retrofitted onto what already exists. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does an Arkley business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same in EN5 as anywhere else. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example “handyman arkley” or “gardener en5”, alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
Is this the same as the High Barnet page?
No. High Barnet's page is about the 1199 market charter, the 1588 fair charter and the station. This page is written only for Arkley's own windmill, golf club and wartime listening station, a different place with no parade at all.
