Web design for painters and decorators

People choose a decorator on the finish and the dust sheets.

A decorating enquiry is really two questions. Will it look right when you have finished, and what will my house be like while you are in it? The website answers both before anyone picks up the phone: finished rooms, the preparation behind them, interior and exterior work kept apart. Then we host it, update it and look after it.

  • Per month: £49.99
  • Upfront website design fee: £0

The finish

Nobody can picture two coats of eggshell. Everybody understands the same wall twice.

Decorating is the one trade every customer half-believes they could do themselves. Photographs change their mind: the wall before you touched it, and the wall when you left.

A room taken from fresh plaster to finished walls: filled, sanded, mist coat, two full top coats, woodwork in satin.

  • Shoot both from the same doorway

Same spot, same height, similar light. It is the one rule that makes a pair believable.

  • The preparation is what they pay for

Filling, caulking, sanding and lining all vanish under the colour. A middle photograph of the prepared room often wins the job, because nobody else takes one.

  • Exteriors need their own pairs

A front elevation before and after masonry paint, with the windows and door finished, sells outside work better than any paragraph about coatings.

Inside or outside

Inside the house and outside it are two different decisions.

The customer who wants the lounge done before Christmas and the one who wants the front of the house done before winter are not the same person. They search at different times of year and worry about different things, so the site gives them two routes.

Decided in the evening, about one room, and almost always against a date: before the baby arrives, before Christmas, before the carpet goes down. The worry is mess, so these pages talk about protection and days as much as colour.

Walls and ceilings

Filled, sanded, lined where the plaster needs it, mist coat on new work, then two full top coats.

Woodwork and doors

Skirting, architrave, doors, windows and stairs, rubbed down and finished in satin, eggshell or gloss.

Wallpaper and wallcoverings

Feature walls, whole rooms, wide-width vinyls and paste-the-wall papers, with the pattern matched properly.

Kitchen and furniture spraying

Doors and carcasses degreased, keyed, primed and finished. Customers search for this one by name.

Hallways and staircases

A tower, a plan and a sheet on every tread. Most decorators price it differently from a bedroom.

Between tenancies

Landlords want a flat turned round in days, not weeks. If you take that work, it needs saying.

If you never go outside, interiors lead the whole site. If exteriors pay the bills, exteriors go first.

The week itself

You are not selling paint. You are selling a week of somebody in the house.

By the time they ring, the colour is your problem. What they are still deciding is whether they want someone in the hallway for six days with the family going round them. Answering that in writing is worth more than another finished wall.

  1. 01

    What happens to the furniture

Moved in and sheeted, floors covered, curtains down and back up. Say it and the first phone call gets shorter.

  2. 02

How much dust there really is

Vacuum sanders, doorways taped, windows shut on a sanding day. Nobody expects a spotless house; they want to know what to expect.

  3. 03

    The preparation, in order

Fill, caulk, sand, wipe down, prime bare patches, line where the wall needs it. Most of the labour, none of the photographs.

  4. 04

Where the edges are cut in

Ceiling lines, skirting, sockets and switches. This is what gets inspected on the last afternoon and described to a neighbour months later.

  5. 05

A number of days, not a vague fortnight

A start date, how many days, and what gets done on each of them. Decorating goes wrong when nobody agreed the length of the job.

  6. 06

How you leave it, at night and at the end

Sheets folded, sockets back on, kettle usable, then a walk round with a torch and a snagging list.

None of this is there out of modesty. It is what separates one of three prices from the booking.

The diary

Exteriors get booked in March. Interiors get booked in November.

Decorating is sold by the week, not by the job, and the year has a shape. The first dry spell fills the exterior diary in a fortnight. Summer belongs to whole-house exteriors and to landlords turning flats round. From October the work moves indoors and everything is measured against Christmas. January is the month every decorator would like to fill.

A site that says what you are booking now, and how far ahead you are working, stops the enquiries you cannot take and brings forward the ones you can. Distance follows the same logic: a three-week job is worth a longer drive than an afternoon in a hallway, so the site names the towns you will travel to for a full week and the tighter patch you keep for small work. Towns are how people search, so naming them is how the page gets found.

The site plan

Five pages, and nobody has to guess which one is theirs.

Interiors one way, exteriors the other, the finished work in the middle, and an enquiry route that works one-handed on a phone.

Credentials

Letting a stranger into the house for a week is the real decision.

Decorating works around the family, the dog and the school run, in rooms full of things that break. Membership, insurance, training and reviews settle that faster than any paragraph can, so they go in the first screen and beside the enquiry form.

We never add a badge, a review or a founding date you have not given us. What you hold is yours; our job is making sure nobody misses it.

What we will display, if you hold it

  • Dulux Select Decorator status
  • Painting and Decorating Association membership
  • TrustMark registration
  • Public liability insurance, with the level of cover stated
  • City and Guilds or NVQ qualifications in painting and decorating
  • A DBS check, where you work in schools, care homes or occupied lettings
  • Reviews you have collected, shown as they were written

Scheme names are shown for illustration. You tell us what you hold during onboarding, and that is what appears.

The logic of SEO

The quiet fortnight in January is the one worth being visible for.

Decorating demand swings with the season, and the decorators who fill the gaps are already showing up when somebody two streets away decides this is the year the hall gets done. Visibility is monthly work, not something you switch on when the diary empties.

The kind of searches SEO works on

  1. painter and decorator Cheltenham
  2. exterior house painting Cheltenham
  3. wallpaper hanger Cheltenham

£349.99/month total, website included. SEO never promises a position, a number of enquiries or a revenue figure. It promises the work, every month.

Already have a website you are happy with? Ongoing SEO is only available with the managed website, as Website + SEO — PrimeStart does not run SEO on a site it does not host. If you would rather keep your current site, talk to us first and we will tell you honestly whether moving it across is worth it.

  1. 1

A site as neat as the work you sell

A decorator is judged on tidiness long before anyone sees a wall. A clean, current site with real rooms on it earns the first call.

  2. 2

    Found when the season turns

The SEO work is monthly work on how easily local customers find that site: the searches that matter, your Google Business Profile, your listings.

  3. 3

In front of the work you would rather have

Being visible to people already searching near you puts your name in front of the work you want more of.

  4. 4

A page that turns a look into a date

Every page ends in one step: ring, or send a photograph of the room with a rough date. Attention needs somewhere to go.

The plans

The same decorating website, with or without the monthly SEO work.

A professional website for a painting and decorating business, built around interiors, exteriors and the work you want more of, then hosted and looked after for you.

Designers usually charge for the build before the website exists. We absorb that cost and recover it through the monthly service, which is why the plan carries a minimum term, and why there is nothing to pay up front beyond the first month.

Complete the term and the website is yours: stay with us on a rolling basis with no new minimum, or move it to hosting of your own.

Want PrimeStart working on how customers find you? Website + SEO is £349.99 a month in total, with the same website included. The same managed website, plus monthly work on how people in your towns find it when they finally decide the hall needs doing. How SEO works

How it works

Your part fits between the first coat and the second.

Choose a plan, tell us about the business and the work you want more of, then look at the draft. We do the rest.

See the full process, start to finish

  1. 1

    Choose your plan

Pick Website or Website + SEO. Your first monthly payment is taken at signup.

  2. 2

    Tell us about the business

A short onboarding in your Client Platform: services, areas, anything you want highlighted, your logo, any photos and the number you want calls to go to.

  3. 3

    Ready to Build

We check we have what we need. If something's missing we'll say exactly what, and work with what you have where we can.

  4. 4

    First draft

You see a working draft of your site, on desktop and phone, and tell us what to change.

  5. 5

    Approve and launch

Reasonable in-scope revisions, then you approve it. Nothing goes live until you say so.

Timing, stated properly

We aim to have your first website draft ready within 5 working days once PrimeStart has everything needed and confirms your project is Ready to Build. Payment alone doesn’t start the clock; missing details, revisions or domain delays can extend it.

Before you approve

You review the draft and request reasonable in-scope changes. If there’s a genuine problem we can’t put right within scope after reasonable attempts, we can cancel the agreement and refund Website subscription payments made, subject to any disclosed non-recoverable third-party costs.

What painters and decorators ask us

How much does a website for a painting and decorating business cost?
£49.99 a month, with a £0 upfront website design fee. Your first £49.99 is taken at signup and the Website runs on an 18-month minimum term, which is 18 payments of £49.99, £899.82 in total. That covers the design and build, managed hosting, your domain name, SSL, security, backups, WordPress and plugin updates, enquiry forms, basic Google foundations, reasonable small changes subject to fair use, support, and your own Client Platform. Complete the term and the website is yours: stay with PrimeStart at £49.99 a month rolling, with no new minimum term, or move it elsewhere.
Is the domain name included?
Yes, the domain name is part of the plan: registered and managed for you, and if you already own one we will use that instead. You will never need to log into WordPress or a hosting account, and there is one place to go when you want something changed, which is your Client Platform.
Can the site show before and after photographs?
Yes, and on a decorator's site they should lead. A pair you can drag across sits in the first screen, and the work page carries more, each with the room, the finish and how long it took. Take both from the same doorway in similar light, and send new pairs as jobs finish; we add them as a small change under fair use.
Can interior and exterior work have separate pages?
Yes, and usually they should, because they are two different decisions. Each gets its own page and its own route from the first screen, so a customer lands on the work they are actually thinking about. If you only do one of the two, the whole site leads with it.
Can I explain how I price a job without putting figures on the site?
Yes. Most decorators would rather see the room than commit to a number, so the site explains how you work a price out: by the day, by the room or after a visit. The enquiry form then asks for a room count, a rough date and a photograph, so your first answer can be a useful one.
Will you show my Dulux Select or Painting and Decorating Association membership?
If you hold them, yes. Dulux Select Decorator status, Painting and Decorating Association membership, TrustMark, your insurance and your qualifications appear in the first screen, on the about page and next to the enquiry form. We only display what you actually hold, and we ask for it during onboarding.
How quickly will I see a first draft?
We aim to have your first draft ready within 5 working days from Ready to Build, which is the point where PrimeStart has everything needed and confirms the project can start. Payment and onboarding on their own do not begin that period. You review the draft in your Client Platform, ask for changes, and nothing is published until you approve it.
What is SEO, and do I need it to start?
SEO is optional ongoing work on how easily local customers find you, at £349.99 a month in total with the website included rather than charged on top. Three priority searches are agreed with you, and the work covers your Google Business Profile, local listings and monthly improvements to the site. The SEO work runs on a 6-month minimum, and every month of it counts towards the 18-month Website term. Most decorators start on the Website and take on the SEO work before the spring exterior season. Nobody can promise a position or a number of enquiries, and we do not.
