Osidge
Hampden Square, Osidge House and a boundary confirmed twice.
The name Osidge is first documented in a 1176 charter of Henry II to the Abbot of St Albans, concerning woodland adjacent to what became Enfield Chase, and probably derives from Old English words for the boundary edge of Southaw wood. Thomas Lipton, the grocery magnate, moved to Osidge House in 1893 and was created the first and only 'Baronet of Osidge' in 1902; after his death in 1931 most of his 60-acre estate was developed, and the Sir Thomas Lipton Memorial Home operated on part of it from 1935 to 2014. Osidge House itself is Grade II listed. Hampden Square, at the junction of Osidge Lane and Hampden Way, holds three shop parades and the Osidge Arms public house, and is the district's actual commercial centre; Oak Hill Park forms Osidge's northern boundary.
Osidge has always been in the district of East Barnet and lies outside the pre-1965 Borough of Southgate, even though residents often regard it as part of Southgate. A 1992 Boundary Commission report rejected proposals to move most of Osidge into the London Borough of Enfield, partly on the grounds of objections from Barnet Council, local schools and residents that the Osidge community identified itself with Barnet.
That gap between the map and everyday speech is a genuine risk for a search, not a footnote. A customer typing 'Southgate' may never see a Hampden Square business at all, and a customer typing 'Osidge' may not know whether to expect Barnet or Enfield services. A website that names Osidge, Barnet and Hampden Square together, correctly, is solving a confusion the area's own history created rather than adding to it.
