Angel
Islington's flagship centre, and the only address in the borough where an evening out is a genuine decision, not a default.
The trading core runs from the junction outside the tube station north along Upper Street to Islington Green and beyond, with Chapel Market running west inside the same town centre boundary as a daily street market of fruit, vegetables, fish and household goods, and Camden Passage running parallel as a pedestrian lane of antique dealers, independents, cafes and restaurants. The mix is unusually complete for one centre: a long restaurant and bar street, fringe theatres, an exhibition venue, a cinema, chain and independent retail, and a substantial layer of clinics, salons, agencies, estate agents and professional offices above and behind the frontage. It is the one town centre in Islington with a levy-funded BID actively promoting it as a destination.
That completeness is also why the comparison isn't local. Clerkenwell next door is a weekday business district that empties at night; Barnsbury and Canonbury behind it have no trading street at all; Pentonville to the west is an arterial road.
