Nag's Head

A major centre on Seven Sisters Road whose busiest trading floors are indoors.

The Nag's Head junction, where Holloway Road meets Seven Sisters Road, is named in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres across Greater London. What that scale looks like on the ground here is unusual: a covered market of small independent stalls trading since the mid-1970s, a shopping arcade opened in 1992 linking a supermarket (once a Safeway, now a Morrisons) to the larger units around it, and back-of-arcade and upper-floor units that a pavement never shows. Around them are the everyday shops, cafes, takeaways, barbers and repair businesses a busy junction supports, and a listed 1930s cinema on the corner of Tufnell Park Road.

Being inside a building rather than on a street is the whole problem this page is written for. A stall or a unit here shares one postal address with dozens of other businesses, has no window a photograph can be taken of from outside, and depends entirely on a customer already knowing to walk in. It's the hardest discoverability problem in this batch of Islington localities, and it's also the most fixable, because almost nobody trading here has bothered to fix it yet. Even the centre's own name outlasted its source: it comes from the Nag's Head public house on the junction, which closed in 2004, so the name survives on buses and in planning documents but on no shopfront at all.

A stall or unit with its own site - its own trading name, its own photographs of its own counter, its own hours, its own products described in the words people actually search, and clear directions saying which entrance, which floor, which side - stops being a face in a market and becomes a business somebody looked for by name.
