For decades the name meant Arsenal's stadium. The club moved to the Emirates Stadium, about 460 metres away, when it opened on 26 October 2006, and the old ground was redeveloped into 650 flats known as Highbury Square. What's left is a residential district across five conservation areas, one genuine trading parade at Highbury Barn – a butcher, a fishmonger, a cheese shop, delis, cafes, restaurants and a pub – and the interchange station at the southern corner, where the Victoria line, the Overground and Great Northern all meet. The district's housing sits across five separate conservation areas – Highbury Fields, Highbury New Park, Aberdeen Park, Sotheby Road and Whistler Street – built up through the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Its one real trading parade is Highbury Barn, at the top of Highbury Park: independent food shops, a butcher, a fishmonger, a cheese shop, delis, cafes, restaurants and a pub, plus everyday services. Highbury Corner, at the southern end, is a major road and rail interchange rather than a shopping centre, and Highbury & Islington station there carries the Victoria line, the Overground's Mildmay and Windrush lines, and Great Northern's Northern City line.
The name carries a weight the district itself no longer does. Arsenal played here until Islington Council refused planning permission to expand the ground; the club moved to the Emirates Stadium in Holloway when it opened in October 2006, and the old ground was converted into 650 flats called Highbury Square. Away from the Barn, what trades here is household services, property trades, home-based professionals and clinical and therapeutic practices – ordinary local businesses standing in the shadow of a search term that still means a stadium.
That's a search problem more than a marketing one. Being a good butcher, dentist or plumber on the Barn parade doesn't get you past a results page dominated by fixtures, ticketing and old stadium history on its own.
