Canning Town

An interchange, a market, and an address book that keeps changing.

Barking Road, connecting the East India Docks and Barking, was established by Act of Parliament in 1809, and a five-span iron bridge was constructed in 1810 to carry it across the River Lea at Bow Creek. The area is thought to be named after Charles John Canning, the first Viceroy of India, around the time the district expanded in the mid-19th century. Royal Victoria Dock opened in 1855 and accelerated the area's development.

The industrial history is specific and unusual. The Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company operated here, and its works team later became West Ham United, which is where the club's Irons and Hammers nicknames come from. Canning Town station now serves both London Underground and DLR services, and Rathbone Market is among the area's shopping centres. The 2021 census recorded 42,667 residents across the Canning Town North and Canning Town South wards.

The commercial complication is not the name but the map. This is an area under long-term, large-scale rebuilding, which means street layouts, entrances and addresses have genuinely changed within the working life of most businesses here. A directory entry or a set of written directions from a few years ago can send a customer to a road that no longer runs the way it did. A site that names Rathbone Market, the station or an exact stretch of Barking Road is doing something a postcode alone cannot.

Where our Canning Town customers work
  • Barking Road, Canning Town
  • Rathbone Market
  • Canning Town station
  • Bow Creek

The street map here has changed and is still changing, so we name the market, the station or your exact stretch of road rather than relying on an address alone.

Two ways to start on Barking Road.

A professional website, or that website with ongoing SEO from the start. Both name fixed points rather than addresses, because the addresses here have been moving.

When the street map changes, the website is the only thing that can keep up.

Old listings send people to the wrong side of a junction that has been rebuilt. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches like these.

  1. 01
    “builder canning town

A large area under rebuilding, so the area name alone leaves a customer guessing which part of a changed street map you are on.

  2. 02
    “cafe rathbone market

A fixed point that has not moved, and therefore a more reliable instruction than a street address in an area being redeveloped.

  3. 03
    “electrician barking road e16

The road established by Act of Parliament in 1809, paired with the postcode, because Barking Road runs a long way through several districts.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what people around the market actually type. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

Canning Town industries

Trades working in and around a construction site.

A builder near Bow Creek and a cafe by Rathbone Market are affected by the same rebuilding in opposite ways, and both need directions on the site that will still be right next year.

Questions

Questions from Canning Town businesses

Do you build websites for businesses in Canning Town?
Yes, for trades, shops and services around Rathbone Market, along Barking Road and near the station. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
Our street has changed. How does the site handle that?
By leading with things that have not moved. Rathbone Market, Canning Town station and Bow Creek are stable reference points, so directions written around them stay correct even when a road layout or an entrance changes.
Is Canning Town the same as Custom House?
Not now. Early 20th-century maps show Custom House as the eastern part of Canning Town, but they are separate districts today, Custom House has its own Elizabeth line and DLR station, and it has its own page here.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you have now. A business on Barking Road would be starting from the same place as everyone else here: a new site built around the trade, with the SEO work running from day one rather than retrofitted onto what already exists. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does a Canning Town business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same in E16 as anywhere else. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example "builder canning town" or "cafe rathbone market", alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
Are you connected to West Ham United?
No. The Thames Ironworks that stood here produced the works team that became the club, which is a fact about this area's industrial history, but there is no connection to PrimeStart and we do not use club imagery, colours or crests.
