East Ham was first written down as EstHam in that year specifically to distinguish it from West Ham. The two were merged into one borough in 1965 and a new word was invented for the result. Meanwhile the actual trading here runs along High Street North and High Street South, past a town hall opened on 5 February 1903 and a 12th-century church whose graveyard holds the largest nature reserve of its kind in Greater London. East Ham
One of the densest independent high streets in east London, and it runs a long way.
The retail here is overwhelmingly independent and specialist rather than chain-led, and it runs the length of High Street North and High Street South. That length is the practical problem: a customer told only that a business is in East Ham has been given most of a mile of shopfronts to choose from, and the two halves of the street do not feel the same or trade the same.
The civic set pieces are precise and well dated. East Ham Town Hall was built between 1901 and 1903 and opened by Passmore Edwards on 5 February 1903. The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene dates to the first half of the 12th century, and the nature reserve in its churchyard is the largest of its kind in Greater London. Central Park on Central Park Road and Plashet Park on Plashet Grove are the two largest parks in the area, and East Ham Underground station is served by the District and Hammersmith and City lines.
The name is one half of a deliberate pair. It derives from the Old English hamm, meaning a dry area of land between rivers or marshland, and East Ham is first recorded as distinct in 1204 as EstHam. Nine centuries later the distinction still matters commercially, because West Ham is a separate place a short distance away whose name is now dominated by a football club, and because Green Street, which forms the boundary between the two, is a retail destination in its own right with its own page here. The 2011 census recorded a population of 76,186 for East Ham.
