Your neighbourhood is named after a gate that was taken away, so the name gives a customer nothing to aim at.

Forest Gate

A high street on Woodgrange Road, and a conservation estate beside it.

The name is literal. A gate was placed across the modern Woodford Road to prevent cattle straying from the open Wanstead Flats area of Epping Forest onto the main Roman road, and the earliest record of it is in West Ham parish registers of the late 17th century. Wanstead Flats still borders Forest Gate to the north, but the gate itself is long gone, which leaves the name pointing at something a customer cannot see.

The trading is on Woodgrange Road, running north from Romford Road, and it is independent, food-led and service-led rather than chain retail. Forest Gate station has an unusual history for a stop now on the Elizabeth line: it opened in 1840, closed in 1843, and reopened after pressure from local residents on 31 May 1846. Trains run westbound to Paddington and eastbound to Shenfield.

Beside the high street is the Woodgrange Estate, built over a period of 15 years from 1877 to 1892 by Thomas Corbett and his sons, comprising 1,160 houses, and designated a Conservation Area. Emmanuel Church was established in 1852 and St Mark's dates to 1893-1898. The 2011 census recorded 33,619 residents across the Forest Gate North and Forest Gate South wards combined. Between the road, the estate and the station there is plenty for a page to be specific about, which matters when the area name itself refers to a missing object.
