West Ham

A parish named in 958, an interchange on Manor Road, and a name owned by a football club.

The place name derives from the Old English hamm, meaning a dry area of land between rivers or marshland, describing the ground around All Saints Church and West Ham Park that is bounded by the Lea, the Thames and the Roding. The term Hamme first appears in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 958, when King Edgar granted the Manor of Ham to Ealdorman Athelstan, and West Ham as distinct from Ham or East Ham was first recorded in 1186 as Westhamma. It became a large ancient parish of around 4,500 acres.

It was once far more than a district. West Ham became a county borough in 1889, and by the 1901 census it was the ninth most populous district in England, with a population of 267,308. In 1965 the county borough was abolished and merged with East Ham to form the London Borough of Newham. Today the commercial reality is quieter: West Ham station on Manor Road is a major interchange, and around it are light industry, housing and the Lea rather than a shopping street.

The search problem is the sharpest in this batch. West Ham United is named after the area, its nicknames the Irons and the Hammers come from the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, and it moved away long ago. Anyone typing the two words gets fixtures, results and transfer news. A business here has to be found by something else entirely: Manor Road, the station, All Saints Church or West Ham Park.

Where our West Ham customers work
  • West Ham station, Manor Road
  • All Saints Church, West Ham
  • West Ham Park
  • Abbey Mills Pumping Station

The area name is dominated by a football club, so we lead with Manor Road, the station or the park rather than with the two words on their own.

Eighteen months, then the website is yours.

The name in the charter of 958 has outlasted a county borough, a merger, and the departure of the club that borrowed it; All Saints Church is still standing. Complete the minimum term here and the website belongs to you outright.

Two ways to start around Manor Road.

A professional website, or that website with ongoing SEO from the start. Both lead with the street and the station, because the area name belongs to a football club in search.

Two words, a Premier League club in front of them, and Manor Road behind.

Searches carrying only the area name return football. Searches carrying Manor Road, the station or the park return the place. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches like these.

  1. 01
    “electrician west ham

The hardest search in the borough to win on the name alone, which is why the page leans on All Saints Church and West Ham Park instead of the two words a national football club also answers to.

  2. 02
    “plumber manor road e15

Manor Road is the street West Ham station stands on, unambiguous in a way the area name is not, and no football club shares it.

  3. 03
    “cleaner near west ham station

A search made from West Ham station, the interchange where the Jubilee, Hammersmith and City and District lines meet the DLR, which is how most people here describe where they are.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what people around Manor Road actually type. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

West Ham industries

Trades and services, found by street rather than by area.

An electrician and a maintenance company working around Manor Road both have to be reachable without using the two words that return a football club, which changes how the whole site is written.

View all FAQs · All locations

Do you build websites for businesses in West Ham?
Yes, mostly for trades, maintenance and service businesses working from the streets around West Ham station and Manor Road. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
Can we ever rank for our own area name?
Not against national football coverage on the words alone, and we would not promise it. What works is being found by the searches around it: Manor Road, West Ham station, All Saints Church, West Ham Park and the E15 and E13 streets nearby. Those carry real local intent and no club competes for them.
Are you connected to West Ham United?
No, not in any way. The club takes its name from this area and its nicknames from the Thames Ironworks, but it plays at Stratford now and has no connection to PrimeStart. We do not use club imagery, colours or crests on any site we build.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you have now. A business around Manor Road would be starting from the same place as everyone else here: a new site built around the trade, with the SEO work running from day one rather than retrofitted onto what already exists. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does a West Ham business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same around Manor Road as anywhere else. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example "plumber manor road e15" or "cleaner near west ham station", alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
Is this the same as the Green Street or Upton Park page?
No. The Green Street page covers Queen's Market and the ground the club played on until 2016; the Upton Park page covers an 1880s estate name and the station built for it. This page is written only about West Ham itself: the 958 charter, Manor Road, All Saints and the park.
