Chrisp Street Market, designed by Frederick Gibberd, was built as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951 and was the first purpose-built pedestrian shopping area in the United Kingdom, with a clock tower and eighty stalls and tenants trading Monday to Saturday, and conservation area status since 1997. Around it sits the Lansbury Estate, All Saints Church, consecrated in 1823, St Matthias Old Church, built by the East India Company in 1654, and Balfron Tower, built between 1965 and 1967 to a design by Ernő Goldfinger and Grade II* listed. Poplar Baths, first opened in 1852, reopened on 25 July 2016, and Poplar DLR station, open since 1987, is a cross-platform interchange for three of the six DLR lines. A short walk south the towers of Canary Wharf hold a population that moves under cover and rarely comes out to browse a market. Chrisp Street Market was designed by Frederick Gibberd and built for the Festival of Britain in 1951 as the country's first purpose-built pedestrian shopping area, complete with a clock tower and eighty stalls and tenants trading Monday to Saturday; it has held conservation area status since 1997, and ownership of the shopping arcades and the rest of the Lansbury Estate transferred to Poplar HARCA in 2006. Poplar itself was first recorded in either 1327 or 1350, taking its name from black poplar trees, and became an independent parish in 1817.
Around the market sit All Saints Church, consecrated on 3 July 1823 and Grade II listed, St Matthias Old Church, built by the East India Company in 1654, and Balfron Tower, built between 1965 and 1967 to a design by Ernő Goldfinger and now Grade II* listed.
