More people pass through the Blackwall Tunnel every day than will ever stop at Blackwall Basin, and there's no shopping street to change that.

Blackwall has been known by that name since at least the fourteenth century, with shipfitting and repair documented there from 1485. Three ships, the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery, sailed from Blackwall on 20 December 1606 to found Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America.
