Shadwell

A basin, a church and a park, and no trading street between them.

Shadwell Basin is the only one of the London Docks' three locked basins still standing; the south basin dates from 1828-32 and the north from 1854-58. The docks closed in 1969, the council bought the site, and 169 houses and flats were built beside the basin in 1987. St Paul's, rebuilt in 1669 and again in 1820, is traditionally called the Church of Sea Captains, and seventy-five are buried in its churchyard. King Edward Memorial Park opened in 1922 on the site of the Shadwell Fish Market, which traded unsuccessfully from 1885 to 1914 before closing.

None of that is retail. Research into the streets around Shadwell Basin found no trading street of its own, and this record does not invent one. What it found instead is housing built around the basin's locked water, St Paul's churchyard and King Edward Memorial Park — which means a business here is surrounded by exactly the customers it needs, all of them a short walk from the basin gates, none of them walking past. A search happens when something breaks, an appointment is needed, or a service is wanted, not because someone saw a sign on the way past the park railings, because there is no way past to walk.

Shadwell also has two stations serving it, a DLR station that opened in 1987 and an Overground station on the Windrush line, which is worth stating plainly here as a fact about getting to the area, and nothing more. It is not this page's argument, because that argument already belongs to the published Dalston record for two stations sharing one name a short walk apart. Shadwell's case is a different one: the customer is already a neighbour, and the website has to be the thing that gets found when they look, since there is nothing on the street to remind them you're there.

Two ways to start in Shadwell.

A professional website, or that website with ongoing SEO from the start. Both start from the same fact: there's no parade here to be discovered from.

Eighteen months, then the website is yours.

Shadwell Basin has stood as the last of the London Docks' three locked basins since the docks closed in 1969. A website that only ever rents itself back to you monthly doesn't match ground this settled. Complete the minimum term here and it belongs to you, whether you stay with PrimeStart or not.

  1. Month 1 We design and build it

Your first £49.99 is taken at signup. We build the website around your business and you approve it before anything is published.

  2. Months 1 to 18 We host, manage and support it

Hosting, security, backups, updates and reasonable small changes, while you make the monthly payments. 18 payments of £49.99, £899.82 in total.

  3. After month 18 The website is yours

Complete the minimum term and the payments due under it, and the website belongs to you. It was built for your business, and it stays with your business.

  4. Your choice Stay, or move it

Stay with PrimeStart at £49.99 a month on a rolling basis with no new minimum term, or move the website to hosting of your own.

Moving the website elsewhere is subject to the third-party licences any website relies on, such as WordPress, plugins, fonts and stock photography. The full wording lives in the Website Subscription Terms.

Nobody walks past your door on the streets around Shadwell Basin. They look you up when something breaks.

"Plumber shadwell e1", "hairdresser near shadwell basin", "electrician near me": these are searches made by people who already live here, not people passing a shopfront. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches like these.

  1. 01
    “plumber Shadwell

Typed the moment something fails at home, by someone who lives within a few streets of the basin and wants somebody who can get there quickly, not somewhere to browse.

  2. 02
    “hairdresser near Shadwell Basin

Searched by a neighbour booking an appointment in advance, because there's no salon front on the streets around the basin or St Paul's churchyard to walk into instead.

  3. 03
    “electrician near me Shadwell

A near-me search made from inside the housing around the basin, where the nearest genuinely available trade has to be found by the phone, not by sight.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what people here actually type. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

Shadwell industries

Whatever the trade, the same fact sits underneath it: the customer is already a neighbour.

A plumber working the streets around Shadwell Basin and a hairdresser near St Paul's both live or die on being found by a look-up, not a passer-by.

View all FAQs · All locations

Do you build websites for businesses in Shadwell?
Yes, for trades, salons and home-based practices working the streets around Shadwell Basin, St Paul's and King Edward Memorial Park. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
There's no shopping street in Shadwell. Does that matter for a website?
It's the whole reason one matters here. With no parade around the basin, St Paul's or King Edward Memorial Park to be discovered from, a website is the only thing standing between a job on your own doorstep and a search that sends it two miles away instead.
Shadwell has two stations. Is that a problem for customers finding me?
We name both — the DLR station and the Overground station on the Windrush line — as a fact about getting here, but it isn't the main problem this page solves. Most Shadwell customers already live within a few streets of you; the website's job is to be found by that look-up, wherever they're starting from.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you have now. A business near Shadwell Basin or King Edward Memorial Park would be starting from the same place as everyone else here: a new site built around the trade, with the SEO work running from day one rather than retrofitted onto what already exists. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does a Shadwell business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same for a business by the basin or St Paul's as anywhere else. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example "plumber shadwell" or "hairdresser near shadwell basin", alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
Is there a PrimeStart office in Shadwell?
No. We have no premises in Shadwell or anywhere in Tower Hamlets. Design, build, hosting and support are all handled remotely.
