Shadwell is housing wrapped around a basin, a church and a park. There is no parade for anyone to walk past.

Shadwell Basin is the only one of the London Docks' three locked basins still standing; the south basin dates from 1828-32 and the north from 1854-58. The docks closed in 1969, the council bought the site, and 169 houses and flats were built beside the basin in 1987. St Paul's, rebuilt in 1669 and again in 1820, is traditionally called the Church of Sea Captains, and seventy-five are buried in its churchyard. King Edward Memorial Park opened in 1922 on the site of the Shadwell Fish Market, which traded unsuccessfully from 1885 to 1914 before closing.

None of that is retail. Research into the streets around Shadwell Basin found no trading street of its own, and this record does not invent one. What it found instead is housing built around the basin's locked water, St Paul's churchyard and King Edward Memorial Park — which means a business here is surrounded by exactly the customers it needs, all of them a short walk from the basin gates, none of them walking past. A search happens when something breaks, an appointment is needed, or a service is wanted, not because someone saw a sign on the way past the park railings, because there is no way past to walk.

Shadwell also has two stations serving it, a DLR station that opened in 1987 and an Overground station on the Windrush line, which is worth stating plainly here as a fact about getting to the area, and nothing more. It is not this page's argument, because that argument already belongs to the published Dalston record for two stations sharing one name a short walk apart. Shadwell's case is a different one: the customer is already a neighbour, and the website has to be the thing that gets found when they look, since there is nothing on the street to remind them you're there.
