A dual carriageway runs down the middle of Bromley-by-Bow, and a borough boundary runs along the edge of it.

Bromley-by-Bow's parish was created in 1537 when the area split from Stepney, and it holds Bromley Hall, dating from around 1485 and thought to be the oldest brick house in London, along with the site of St Leonard's Priory, a Benedictine nunnery founded in the time of William the Conqueror, and Kingsley Hall, known for Mahatma Gandhi's visit in 1931. The district is bisected north to south by the Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road — its own dividing road, distinct from the tunnel itself — and it is bounded east by the River Lea, with the best-known landmarks on the far bank sitting in a different borough entirely. Bromley-by-Bow station was renamed from Bromley in 1967 to avoid confusion with the London Borough of Bromley — a second name mix-up on top of the road and river that already divide the area.
