William Cubitt, twice Lord Mayor of London, developed this stretch of the peninsula's eastern side in the 1840s and 1850s to house dock workers, shipbuilders and factory employees, building the local businesses that employed them. The shipyards - Westwood Baillie, Samuda Brothers, J & W Dudgeon and Yarrow among them - and the cement, pottery, brick and asphalt works have all gone. What draws people here now is Mudchute Park and Farm, thirteen hectares made from the spoil of Millwall Dock's construction and saved for public open space by local campaigning in the 1970s; Island Gardens, opened in 1895 at the peninsula's southern tip; and the Greenwich foot tunnel, opened in 1902 and still the way people walk under the river. None of that is a reason to walk past a shop window, which means a business here is found before the visit rather than during it - by a search, a photograph of finished work and an address stated exactly. Cubitt Town was developed by William Cubitt, Lord Mayor of London from 1860 to 1862, in the 1840s and 1850s to house dock workers, shipbuilders and factory employees on the eastern side of the peninsula. Christ Church, Cubitt Town, built between 1852 and 1854, is Grade II* listed, and Cubitt Town Library, Carnegie-funded and completed in 1905 at a cost of £6,805 13s 10d, was extended in 1962. The shipbuilding yards that once worked this stretch - Westwood Baillie, Samuda Brothers, J & W Dudgeon and Yarrow Shipbuilders - along with the cement, pottery, brick and asphalt works, have all closed.
Mudchute Park and Farm covers thirteen hectares, made from spoil pumped out during the 1860s construction of Millwall Dock next door and saved from housing development in the 1970s by the Association of Island Communities, with the farm and garden officially established in 1977. Island Gardens, at the peninsula's southern tip, opened on 3 August 1895, and the Greenwich foot tunnel, begun in June 1899 and opened on 4 August 1902, runs 370.2 metres and 15.2 metres deep beneath the Thames from an entrance close by. Crossharbour DLR station, named after the nearby Glengall Bridge, has served the area since 1987.
