The Gas Light and Coke Company built Fish Island as a factory town in 1865, giving its roads the names of freshwater fish - Dace, Bream and Roach - on ground already known locally as 'the Island'. It went on to become London's largest waterside industrial area, carrying gasworks, wallpaper works, ironworks and plants processing crude oil and coal tar, before artists converted its dilapidated warehouses into studios and lofts during the 1990s.

It's one of fifty-eight conservation areas across Tower Hamlets, and its own record is plain that none of its buildings is individually listed - what's protected is the industrial fabric as a whole, not any single address. The Britannia Works building on that fabric, a former wallpaper works from 1853, is one of the fixed points on this ground, alongside the Hertford Union Canal running along the northern edge, at the boundary with Hackney.
