Web design across the Isle of Dogs peninsula

The Isle of Dogs has been a name since 1520 and a boundary only since 1987 - and it still covers three districts that trade nothing alike.

A website that says which of the Isle of Dogs' three districts you actually trade in, for £49.99 a month.

  • Website: £49.99/month
  • Website design fee: £0 upfront
  • Minimum term, then it is yours: 18 months

Isle of Dogs

One name, three districts, and a boundary that took from 1520 to 1987 to arrive.

The earliest documentary record of the name is that 1520 entry, noting a hose supplied to a ship in dock here. Where the name itself comes from is disputed - the competing explanations include royal kennels, a corruption of Isle of Ducks, Dutch land-reclamation engineers and a yeoman farmer's surname, and the scholar Laura Wright argued in 2015 that it first applied to a small mud eyot used as a mooring point for dockyard vessels from across the river before extending to the whole peninsula. Whatever its origin, the name was in everyday use for centuries with no boundary attached to it at all.

That changed only in 1987, when Tower Hamlets London Borough Council created the Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood. Its own definition of that boundary names three distinct districts inside it: Canary Wharf, Millwall and Cubitt Town. Before the DLR opened that same year, the only way on or off the peninsula by public transport was by bus, and 21,000 people lived here in 1901, most of them dependent on the river trade that has since gone.

None of that history sits on any one street corner, which is exactly the point: 'Isle of Dogs' is a name a customer reaches for before they know which of the three districts they actually mean, and a business that answers by naming its real district gets found by searches the peninsula name alone cannot resolve.

Say which district you're actually in
  • Canary Wharf, if that's your district
  • Millwall, if that's your side of the peninsula
  • Cubitt Town, if that's where you trade
  • the E14 postcode shared by all three
  • the 1987 Neighbourhood boundary that first drew a line here
  • how far the walk to your door actually is

We ask which of the three districts you actually trade in before writing a word, because 'Isle of Dogs' or E14 on its own could mean any of them.

Eighteen months, then the website is yours.

The Isle of Dogs name has outlasted every boundary drawn around it since 1520, formalised only in 1987. A website that states your actual district plainly should last at least as long. Complete the minimum term here and it belongs to you, whether you stay with PrimeStart or not.

  1. Month 1 We design and build it

Your first £49.99 is taken at signup. We build the website around your business and you approve it before anything is published.

  2. Months 1 to 18 We host, manage and support it

Hosting, security, backups, updates and reasonable small changes, while you make the monthly payments. 18 payments of £49.99, £899.82 in total.

  3. After month 18 The website is yours

Complete the minimum term and the payments due under it, and the website belongs to you. It was built for your business, and it stays with your business.

  4. Your choice Stay, or move it

Stay with PrimeStart at £49.99 a month on a rolling basis with no new minimum term, or move the website to hosting of your own.

Moving the website elsewhere is subject to the third-party licences any website relies on, such as WordPress, plugins, fonts and stock photography. The full wording lives in the Website Subscription Terms.

Two ways to start, whichever district you're actually in.

A professional website, or that website with ongoing SEO from the start. Both start by naming your real district, not just the peninsula.

Best for For businesses trading anywhere on the Isle of Dogs peninsula who need a site that names their actual district - Canary Wharf, Millwall or Cubitt Town - rather than the umbrella name alone. For businesses competing for the same peninsula-wide E14 searches, where being found and then understood to be in the right district both matter.
After the term The website is yours. Stay at £49.99 a month rolling, or move it elsewhere. After the SEO minimum you can stop the SEO with 30 days' notice and continue on the Website at £49.99 a month, or keep going.

A search for "Isle of Dogs" or E14 doesn't say which of the three districts you mean.

"Web designer isle of dogs", "estate agent e14", "builder near me": a customer typing any of these could mean Canary Wharf, Millwall or Cubitt Town, three places with three different kinds of trade. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches like these.

  1. 01
    “estate agent Isle of Dogs

Typed by someone who does not yet know that the name covers three genuinely different districts across E14, and needs the result to say plainly which one it means.

  2. 02
    “builder E14

Searched using the E14 postcode because the searcher has heard a business is 'on the Isle of Dogs' and has no way of knowing which of its three districts that puts them in.

  3. 03
    “cleaning company near me

A near-me search that returns results across the whole E14 peninsula unless the site states which district, and therefore which side of it, is actually closest.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what people across the peninsula actually type. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

Isle of Dogs industries

Whichever district you trade in, the peninsula name alone won't say which one.

An estate agent in one district and a cleaning company in another are both searched for under 'Isle of Dogs' or E14, and both lose the customer who meant the other end of it.

Questions from Isle of Dogs businesses

Do you build websites for businesses on the Isle of Dogs?
Yes, for businesses trading anywhere across the peninsula. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
Is this the same as your Canary Wharf, Millwall or Cubitt Town page?
No. This page is for the peninsula name itself and the confusion it causes. Canary Wharf, Millwall and Cubitt Town are the three districts inside it, and each trades completely differently. If you know which one you're actually in, our page for that district covers it in far more detail than a peninsula-wide page can.
Why does it matter which district my website says I'm in?
Because 'Isle of Dogs' itself had no official boundary of any kind until 1987, and it still covers three districts that trade completely differently. A customer searching the peninsula name alone can't tell which one you're in until the site tells them.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you have now. A business anywhere on the peninsula would be starting from the same place as everyone else here: a new site built around the trade, with the SEO work running from day one rather than retrofitted onto what already exists. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does an Isle of Dogs business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same across E14 as anywhere else. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example "web designer isle of dogs" or "estate agent e14", alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
We're not sure which district we're actually in. Does that matter?
Not for getting started. We'll ask exactly where you trade when we build the site, and the site itself will name it plainly, which is the whole point of stating your district rather than leaving it to 'Isle of Dogs' or E14 alone.
