Millwall
A dock that stopped trading in 1981, and a name a football club has carried since 1910.
Millwall sits on the western and southern side of the peninsula, south of Canary Wharf and Poplar, and it takes its name from the windmills once lined up along the river wall, having originally been called Marshwall. Millwall Dock, designed by Sir John Fowler and built speculatively by John Kelk and John Aird & Co, opened in March 1868 to handle timber and grain, trades that moved to Tilbury in the 1960s and 1970s as shipping containerised. The dock closed to commercial traffic in 1981, and the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre was established on the retained water in 1989.
On 31 January 1858, the SS Great Eastern - at 211 metres the largest ship ever built at the time - was launched sideways from Napier Yard here, the last ship of that size built on the island. The spoil dug out during the dock's construction in the 1860s went to create the Mudchute, now a farm in neighbouring Cubitt Town rather than ground of its own.
Millwall F.C. was founded here in 1885 as Millwall Rovers, first nicknamed the Dockers, and moved south of the river to New Cross in 1910 - carrying the name with it ever since.
