Upton Park
A place name invented to sell houses, and a station built to carry it.
The original name is much older and much plainer. It comes from a farmstead and hamlet of Upton at Upton Lane, in what was then West Ham parish, first recorded as Hupington in 1203 and thought to mean at the high lying farmstead. There was no park in it.
The Park arrived in the 1880s. The term Upton Park was applied to a housing estate developed east of West Ham Park, and the developers added the suffix for marketing reasons, then funded a new station bearing the estate's name. The district that grew around it is centred on Green Street, which forms the boundary between West Ham and East Ham, and Upton Park station is on the District and Hammersmith and City lines. Trading here is high-street and service-led, near the station and along Upton Lane running north.
The third meaning is the loudest. The Boleyn Ground was commonly known as Upton Park, and West Ham United relocated to the former Olympic Stadium in Stratford after the 2015-16 season. There is older sporting history too: Upton Park FC, founded in 1866, won the gold medal at the 1900 Summer Olympics football tournament.
