The Corbett family bought 110 acres in 1877 and built through to 1892. The Woodgrange Estate in Forest Gate is the name everyone knows, but the Durham Road Conservation Area here in E12 was designated in 1984 on the same story, and it is Manor Park's own. There is a second confusion on top: this area has two stations, one on the Elizabeth line called Manor Park and one on the Gospel Oak to Barking line called Woodgrange Park, which does nothing to help a customer work out where you are. Romford Road, a stretch of the A118, runs through Manor Park and carries most of its commercial life. This is a road rather than a centre: there is no single square or shopping precinct here in the way Forest Gate has Woodgrange Road or East Ham has High Street North, and the trading is spread along the route and the streets off it.
The stations are the first source of confusion. Manor Park railway station is served by the Elizabeth line, with trains running every ten minutes. Woodgrange Park station, on the Barking to Gospel Oak London Overground line, serves the nearby area, and both are in Transport Zone 3. The second is the heritage. The Corbett family developed the Woodgrange and Durham Road estates between 1877 and 1892, on 110 acres purchased in 1877. The Durham Road Conservation Area, designated in 1984, covers a small late-Victorian development built in the 1880s, and it belongs to Manor Park - but the Corbett name is far more often attached to the larger, better-known estate in Forest Gate. Salisbury primary school, which opened in 1893, is reached from Romford Road or High Street North. Manor Park was originally part of the hundred of Becontree in historic Essex and became part of the London Borough of Newham in 1965.
