There is no Business Improvement District anywhere in this borough. Nobody is marketing Dalston, Mare Street or Hoxton on your behalf.

Hackney

Ten protected industrial areas from Hackney Wick to Ridley Road, no Business Improvement District anywhere, and a business population that resets constantly.

Every other borough on this list has at least one Business Improvement District: Camden has five, Lambeth has six, Islington has two, Haringey and Barnet each have one. This borough has none. The council has stated its own position on the record — it does not see a case for BIDs, preferring public services and the local authority to carry that role directly. In practice that means nobody is collectively promoting Dalston, Mare Street, Hoxton or Stoke Newington, unlike Angel in Islington or Streatham in Lambeth. A business network and a responsible business charter exist locally, but neither is a levy-funded body marketing a high street the way a BID would.

Local Plan LP33 also designates ten Priority Industrial Areas and three Locally Significant Industrial Sites across the borough, protecting studio, workshop and low-specification office space where traditional industrial activity sits alongside smaller-scale production. Hackney Wick and Fish Island is the clearest example: since the Creative Enterprise Zone was established there in 2018, creative enterprises have grown from 395 to just under 500, and total turnover has risen from £189 million in 2018 to £911 million in 2023. A great deal of that trade happens inside arches and units along the canal that no customer will ever walk past on their way to somewhere else.

Layer on top of that a business base the council itself describes as the fastest-growing economy of any London borough since 2017 — its own figures cite 50,000 new jobs and 5,000 new businesses over that period — and the competitive set around Dalston's Ridley Road, Mare Street's Narrow Way and Shoreditch's more than 4,000 businesses is one that changes constantly. Hackney Central was reclassified a Major Centre in LP33 alongside Dalston, and the council has committed £19 million of town-centre investment there, £3 million in Hoxton and £1 million at Ridley Road Market. None of that spending markets an individual trader. The website is what does.
