The River Lea runs down the middle of Lea Bridge, and the boundary between Hackney and Waltham Forest runs with it. A customer can be certain they've found you and still be on the wrong side of the water.

Lea Bridge

One river, two boroughs, and a station on the far bank from the Hackney side of the name.

Lea Bridge is a district in both the London Borough of Hackney and the London Borough of Waltham Forest, with the River Lea forming the boundary and the borough line itself running down the middle of the river. Lea Bridge Road, the A104, crosses that boundary and continues north as the customary dividing point between Upper Clapton and Lower Clapton, so the same road does two jobs of separation at once, borough and corridor.

Lea Bridge station opened on 15 September 1840 as Lea Bridge Road, was renamed Lea Bridge in 1841, became an unstaffed halt in 1976, closed on 8 July 1985 and reopened on 15 May 2016 with a full service from the following day. It stands on Argall Way, close to its junction with Lea Bridge Road, which places the station building itself on the Waltham Forest bank even though the district straddles both boroughs. Recorded passenger entries and exits were 0.617 million in 2022-23, 0.826 million in 2023-24 and 0.877 million in 2024-25, figures for station use, not a measure of trade on the streets around it.

On the Hackney side, the old Middlesex Filter Beds, once part of the Victorian water supply for London, are now a nature reserve, and the site of the former Millfields coal-fired power station is used today as electrical substations on the London Ring. No shopping parade of any kind was found in research. A business here has to say plainly which bank it's on and which approach road leads to it, because the river and the borough line together decide whether a customer arrives or ends up on the wrong side of the water.
