Maryland's earliest recorded appearance is on a map of Essex published by J. Oliver in 1696, marked as Maryland Point. Where the name came from is genuinely disputed. One popular theory is that it originated with a rich local merchant who bought land and built here having returned from the then American colony of Maryland. Professor Ged Martin has proposed instead that it derives from the Old English words maere and mearc, meaning a boundary. The sources record both and settle neither, so neither should be stated as fact.
The place itself is small and station-led. Maryland station opened in 1874 and is now served by Elizabeth line trains, westbound to London Paddington and Heathrow and eastbound to Shenfield. Around it is a short parade of local independents, in the shadow of Stratford's two shopping centres a few minutes down the line. It has grown enough that by 2021 Maryland was recognised as an electoral ward in Newham, with its first two councillors elected in 2022.
Maryland borders Leytonstone to the north, Stratford New Town to the west and Forest Gate to the east, with Stratford town centre to the south-west.
