North Woolwich
North of the river, historically in Kent, and sharing a name across the Woolwich Ferry.
Despite lying on the northern, Essex side of the Thames, this area was within the historic county of Kent. The reason is documented: after 1066 Hamo, Sheriff of Kent, attached Essex land to his Woolwich manor in Kent in order to control the revenues of the crossing that became the Woolwich Ferry, and to gain military and political advantage. A crossing here appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the Woolwich Ferry is still the reason the two banks share a name.
The area is small and physically hemmed in, with the Thames on one side and London City Airport on the other. North Woolwich railway station opened in 1847 and closed in 2006. Today King George V DLR station is the principal public transport asset, offering connections to the City, Canary Wharf, Stratford and Woolwich, and the DLR extension reached here in December 2005. The Woolwich foot tunnel provides a pedestrian crossing beneath the Thames, and Royal Victoria Gardens is the area's main open space, with the formally defined boundaries extending east from it.
For a business, the naming problem is the plainest in this batch and the hardest to write around. The word Woolwich, on its own, means the town on the south bank: its shops, its station, its centre.
