Silvertown

A riverside strip named after a manufacturer, and rebuilt around a new crossing.

The name is a company name. S. W. Silver and Company established a rubber works here in 1852 to manufacture waterproof clothing, and the place took the name of the firm. Sugar followed: Henry Tate joined the local industry in 1877 and Abram Lyle in 1881, and the two operations merged in 1921. Millennium Mills, a historic flour factory, is now undergoing restoration as part of redevelopment plans, and the Silvertown Partnership redevelopment received planning approval on 21 April 2015.

This was one of the most heavily industrial places in London, and the record includes a disaster: an explosion of TNT at the Brunner Mond munitions factory on 19 January 1917 killed 73 people and injured hundreds. It is part of the area's history and it is recorded here as such, not as colour.

The commercial life today is industrial, logistics and construction rather than high-street retail, and access is the thing that has just changed. The Silvertown Tunnel, a toll crossing under the Thames, opened in 2025. Pontoon Dock DLR station serves the area, on the extension to Woolwich Arsenal that opened on 2 December 2005.
