Upper Holloway

Between Nag's Head and Archway, on a railway that never reaches central London.

This is the stretch of Holloway Road between Nag's Head and Archway, turning north-west into Junction Road, carrying everyday trade rather than a designated town centre of its own: convenience shops and grocers, takeaways and cafes, barbers and beauty, phone and computer repair, pharmacies, motor and building trades, and small professional and clinical practices. Behind the main road, Hornsey Road, Tollington Way, Mercers Road, Sussex Way and the streets around Whittington Park are dense residential terraces. Islington's Local Plan names Nag's Head and Archway as the designated centres either side of it; Upper Holloway itself is the road that joins them.

What sets it apart is what runs underneath it. Upper Holloway station sits directly beneath the Holloway Road bridge, with steps and ramps straight down to the platform, on the Gospel Oak to Barking line - rebranded by TfL in 2024 as the Suffragette line. Trains run every 15 minutes each way through most of the day (half-hourly late in the evening), on four-car Class 710 units, and Archway on the Northern line is a short walk away. But the Suffragette line itself never approaches central London: it runs east-west across the top of the city, putting Crouch Hill, Harringay, Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow, Leyton and Barking in one direction, and Kentish Town and Hampstead Heath in the other, within an easy, direct ride.

That's a real and largely unclaimed catchment. Almost every business near here assumes its market runs south towards town, because that's where the tube usually goes - but for anything worth travelling for, a specialist repair, a trade counter, a clinic, a particular dish, a service with a waiting list, the sideways catchment along this line is one that no Archway or Nag's Head business is deliberately targeting.
