Whitechapel Road runs from the market to the gallery to the hospital, and 'Whitechapel Road' on its own places a customer nowhere in particular.

One road long enough to need a number, not just a name.

Whitechapel Market has run on Whitechapel Road between Vallance Road and Cambridge Heath Road since 1904, when the old Metropolitan Borough of Stepney set out to regulate the traders working the road. It's open Monday to Saturday and is owned and managed by Tower Hamlets' own Market Service, one stretch of trading on a road that runs a good deal further than that in both directions.

The rest of the road carries its own institutions rather than shops: the Royal London Hospital, on Whitechapel Road since 1757 and rebuilt at a cost of £650 million in 2012, with its old building now the borough's Town Hall since 2023; the Whitechapel Gallery, at 77-82 Whitechapel High Street since 1901; the former Whitechapel Bell Foundry at 32-34 Whitechapel Road, which cast Big Ben in 1858 and closed in 2017 after nearly 450 years; Altab Ali Park, on the site of the old parish church; the East London Mosque; and Whitechapel station.

Put all of that on one road and 'Whitechapel Road' stops being a useful address on its own. A hospital visitor, a gallery-goer and a market shopper can all be told the same street name and end up the better part of a mile apart. The fix is ordinary: your actual number, the nearest cross street, which station exit, and the walk in minutes, written the same way everywhere a search engine reads it.
