Leyton
Three trading areas, one name, and a neighbour spelled almost the same.
The High Road runs the length of Leyton, with its commercial weight concentrated where Lea Bridge Road crosses it at the Bakers Arms junction. Away from that, Leyton Mills is a retail park of large units, and Francis Road is a parade of independents. Those are three different commercial propositions and three different kinds of customer, and none of them is described by the word Leyton on its own.
The name is old and specific: it means the settlement on the River Lea, and the place was known until 1921 as Low Leyton. The Domesday Book of 1086 listed six estates or manors here with 51 households. Leyton Town Hall on Adelaide Road was built in 1895 and Coronation Gardens opened in 1903, named after the coronation of King Edward VII. Leyton Underground station opened at Low Leyton in 1856 on what is now the Central line, and Leyton Midland Road opened in 1894 on the Gospel Oak to Barking line. Leyton Orient moved to Brisbane Road in 1936.
None of that history solves the spelling. Leytonstone is a separate place with its own High Road a mile away, and the two names differ by one syllable in speech and four letters in writing. A search, a directory entry or a customer repeating your address to someone else can all lose that difference. Naming Adelaide Road, the Bakers Arms junction, Francis Road or Brisbane Road puts something on the page that Leytonstone cannot also claim.
