East Barnet shared a council with the place next door for seventy years. It never shared a shopping parade.

East Barnet

East Barnet formed part of the East Barnet Urban District of Hertfordshire from 1894 until 1965, when it transferred to Greater London and merged with other districts to form the London Borough of Barnet, the same seventy-year administrative history that New Barnet shares. But its own centre is the parish church, St Mary the Virgin, standing within the modern Brunswick Park ward, alongside Cat Hill and the former East Barnet Town Hall building, which survives on Station Road from the area's time as an independent local authority.

New Barnet, a mile or so away, grew up around the Great Northern Railway's 1850 station and now trades on East Barnet Road's shopping parade, anchored by a Sainsbury's. East Barnet has no sourced shopping parade of its own to set against that: what it has instead is the church, the green around Cat Hill, and the businesses that operate from homes and small premises serving that quieter, more residential ground.

That difference matters for a website, because a shared council history from before 1965 is exactly the kind of thing that makes a search blur two places that a customer, once they arrive, would never confuse. A site that names St Mary the Virgin and Cat Hill precisely, rather than referring vaguely to “Barnet”, is what tells a customer they've found the right side of the old urban district before they set off.
