East Finchley was first mentioned in 1365 as the scattered hamlet of East End; it had become the most populous part of Finchley by 1860, and a recognisable High Road had emerged by 1914, once the Great Northern Railway reached the area in 1868. The present East Finchley Underground station opened in 1939, and Eric Aumonier's Art Deco Archer statue was erected above its entrance the following year.

The Phoenix Cinema opened in May 1912 as the East Finchley Picturedrome, with 428 seats. It was renamed Coliseum in 1924, redesigned and reopened as the Rex in September 1938, and took its present name, Phoenix, in 1975; it received Grade II listing in 2000, which cites its original barrel-vaulted ceiling and 1938 decorative wall panels. It is one of the country's earliest cinemas still operating as one. East Finchley was badly bombed during the Second World War, and post-war rebuilding replaced the pattern of the Old Village's streets. Cherry Tree Wood, covering 4.5 hectares, Holy Trinity Church and St Pancras and Islington Cemetery, described as London's oldest and largest municipal cemetery, all sit around the same High Road.
