Web design around North Finchley's lido, hospital and college

This centre has traded under three different names before the one people use today. A windmill became an inn, and the inn was renamed twice before North Finchley took shape around it.

North Finchley

A windmill, then an inn, then another inn under a different name - long before the centre people search for today.

North End, the district's old name, was first recorded in 1462. Thomas Rawson built a windmill and house here in 1627, and by 1722 it had become an inn known as the Windmill; it was renamed the Swan with Two Nicks in 1754. The Urban District of Finchley, created in 1894, became the Municipal Borough of Finchley in 1932, and that borough was abolished in 1965 into the London Borough of Barnet.

Around that shifting name, a genuinely civic centre grew up. Christ Church's construction began in 1864, it formally opened in 1870, and became a separate parish in 1872. Finchley Lido opened as an Art Deco outdoor swimming pool in September 1931, was heated until the Second World War, hosted 1948 Olympic water polo events, and closed in 1992 before a replacement facility opened in 1996. Finchley Cottage Hospital opened in 1908 with 18 beds and was renamed Finchley Memorial Hospital in 1922. Coppetts Wood survives as a remnant of the medieval Finchley Wood, and Woodhouse Grammar School became Woodhouse College in 1925.

The residential streets around all of this carry their own names, too: Private John Parr, described as the first British soldier and the first soldier of the Commonwealth killed in the First World War, lived at 52 Lodge Lane, and the comedian Spike Milligan lived on Holden Road. Naming the actual street, the actual building and what you do on it is what stops a customer's search resolving to the postcode's most famous corner instead of your door.

If you're on Lodge Lane, Holden Road or another North Finchley street, the site names it specifically, rather than leaving it to the postcode alone.

North Finchley has changed its own name three times. A search here needs your street, not just the postcode.

"Physiotherapist Lodge Lane", "tutor near Finchley Lido": people here search with a specific street or building attached, because North Finchley itself covers a lot of ground under one name. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches like these.

An illustration of the kind of local results SEO works towards. The businesses, ratings and positions shown are examples, not a ranking or a result for any particular business.

  1. 01
    “physiotherapist Lodge Lane

Typed by someone on or near Lodge Lane who wants a practice on their own street, not just a listing for North Finchley generally.

  2. 02
    “tutor near Finchley Lido

Parents using the lido or the college as a landmark, wanting a tutor who confirms they cover that exact part of North Finchley.

  3. 03
    “dentist North Finchley

A wider search across the district that needs the result to name a street or building precisely, since North Finchley itself covers ground that has changed identity several times.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what North Finchley customers actually search from. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

North Finchley industries

The lido, the hospital and the college set the shape here, not a shopping parade.

A physiotherapist near Finchley Memorial Hospital and a tutor near Woodhouse College are both searched for under North Finchley, and both need a site that names the actual building or street precisely.

View all FAQs · All locations

Do you work with businesses in North Finchley?
Yes, for the services and trades around Finchley Lido, Christ Church, Finchley Memorial Hospital, Coppetts Wood, Woodhouse College and the streets off Lodge Lane and Holden Road. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
Is this the same as your Finchley page?
No. That page covers Ballards Lane, Tally Ho Corner and the shops around them. This page is written for North Finchley's own ground: its lido, hospital, college and residential streets.
Why does the area's own name history matter to my website?
Because a windmill built here in 1627 became an inn, then a differently named inn, before the Municipal Borough of Finchley formed in 1932 and was abolished into Barnet in 1965. A business here is competing for attention inside a place whose identity has already shifted several times, so naming your actual street or building precisely, rather than the postcode's best-known corner, is what gets you found for your own address.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you already trade from here. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does a North Finchley business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same here as anywhere else. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example "physiotherapist lodge lane", alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
Holden Road and Lodge Lane come up in local history. Does that help my business?
Only if your website says so specifically. Private John Parr, described as the first British soldier killed in the First World War, lived at 52 Lodge Lane, and the comedian Spike Milligan lived on Holden Road. Neither fact sells anything on its own, but naming the exact street you trade from, the same way, is what turns a general North Finchley search into a result for your address.
