Royal Docks

Three docks, an airport and an enterprise zone, under one area name.

Royal Victoria Dock opened in 1855, Royal Albert Dock in 1880, providing access to Gallions Reach 11 miles below London Bridge, and King George V Dock was completed in 1921 by the Port of London Authority. The three collectively formed the largest enclosed docks in the world, with a water area of nearly 250 acres. They closed to commercial traffic in 1981, after steady decline from the 1960s following the adoption of containerisation.

What replaced the shipping is not a high street. London City Airport opened in 1988 on the quay between Royal Albert Dock and King George V Dock. The Royal Docks gained Enterprise Zone status covering 125 hectares in 2011. The Docklands Light Railway extension opened in 1994, providing links to the City of London and Canary Wharf, and the DLR link to London City Airport opened in December 2005. The 2011 census recorded a population of 10,679 in the Royal Docks ward.

Commercially this is the least high-street place in the batch, and the most spread out. Businesses here are as likely to serve events, aviation, logistics and construction as local retail, and the distances involved are real: the quayside at one dock is a long way from the quayside at another. That is why the area name is close to useless as a direction, and why the website has to carry the specific dock, the specific DLR stop or the specific quay.
