The name evolved from 'Little Barnet' in the 13th century, through 'Frerenbarnet', to 'Friern Barnet' - 'Friern' recording the medieval Brotherhood or Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The district's actual centre is formed by three roads meeting: Colney Hatch Lane running north to south, Woodhouse Road leading west toward North Finchley, and Friern Barnet Road leading east toward New Southgate. The North Circular Road bisects the southern part of the area.

On Friern Barnet Road itself stand the converted buildings of the former Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum, which opened in 1851 and has since been redeveloped as Princess Park Manor and Friern Village, and St John the Evangelist, the parish church, which is Grade II* listed. There is no Underground station in Friern Barnet; the nearest are Arnos Grove, Woodside Park and Finchley Central, so most customers arrive by bus or by car rather than on foot from a station forecourt.
