A market charter from 1199, a fair charter from 1588, and a station named after its own elevation.
On 23 August 1199 King John issued a charter for a market at Barnet to the Abbot of St Albans, John de Cella, a grant that stands behind nearly all of the town's later trade. Elizabeth I added a further charter in 1588 for a twice-yearly horse fair, still held each September, and its name is where English got the rhyming slang “barnet” for hair. High Barnet Underground station opened in 1872 on what became the Northern line, at around 427 feet, among the highest points in London, and it takes its own name from that elevation rather than from any street below it.
