Shacklewell Lane has carried this name since 1490. It is also a name most people round here have stopped saying.

Shacklewell

A fifteenth-century hamlet name over a residential grid, on Shacklewell Lane and around Shacklewell Green.

Shacklewell is old ground: a hamlet recorded from 1490, named for the local springs and wells, and still marked on Rocque's map of 1746. Shacklewell Green was manorial waste handed to the Hackney Board of Works as public open space in 1883, the Shacklewell Lane Triangle survives alongside it, and the terraces around both went up in the 1880s.

Its working history has moved on entirely. The Lloyd, Attree and Smith factory at 18-28 Shacklewell Lane, built in 1899 and licensed for 600 employees, relocated away in the 1970s, and the Shacklewell Washing Baths that opened in December 1931 and reopened after bomb damage in 1942 belong to a different era of the street. No distinct trading street has replaced them, and the sources are plain that the place is now considered part of Dalston, with the name itself no longer commonly used.

That is a naming problem before it is anything else. A trade recommended by word of mouth on Shacklewell Lane often travels without the word 'Shacklewell' attached to it at all, which means the business cannot rely on the district name doing any work online. What has to carry it instead is the actual street - Shacklewell Lane, Shacklewell Green, the terrace it sits on - stated plainly, with real photographs of finished jobs standing in for a parade this grid has never had.
