Newham

Stratford, East Ham, Canning Town and the Royal Docks, under a name invented for the paperwork.

The London Borough of Newham was formed on 1 April 1965 under the London Government Act 1963 by merging the county boroughs of West Ham and East Ham. The name was devised for the borough as an entirely new word, built from the compass points of its two predecessors. The 2021 census recorded a population of 351,030 across 28 electoral wards and 13.98 square miles, and the borough has no single dominant town centre: its major districts include Stratford, East Ham, West Ham, Beckton and Canning Town.

That absence of a centre is the practical fact a business here has to design around. Stratford has two full-scale retail geographies facing each other across a railway, one of them built around a shopping centre that opened in September 2011 and an Olympic park that opened permanently in 2014. East Ham and Green Street are dense, independent, specialist high streets. Canning Town, Custom House and the Royal Docks belong to the river, an enterprise zone and an airport inside the borough boundary. A customer in one has no particular reason to travel to another.

On top of that, this borough contains an unusual concentration of names that point somewhere else. West Ham is now mostly known as a football club that plays in Stratford. Upton Park is a district, a station and a stadium nickname. Custom House shares its name with a landmark in the City of London. North Woolwich is on the opposite bank from Woolwich. Maryland is a US state. Every one of those has its own page here, because none of them can be solved by writing the borough name.

The districts we build for across the borough
  • Stratford and Maryland
  • East Ham, Green Street and Upton Park
  • Canning Town, Custom House and Plaistow
  • the Royal Docks, Silvertown and North Woolwich
  • Beckton, Forest Gate and Manor Park

London City Airport sits inside the borough boundary, between Royal Albert Dock and King George V Dock, but no district here is the centre, because the borough does not have one.

Two ways to start, in whichever district you trade.

A professional website, or that website with ongoing SEO from the start. Both are written around the district a customer would actually name, not around the borough.

Newham industries

Every trade here has the same problem with the borough name.

A restaurant on Green Street and a garage in Beckton are in completely different commercial settings — one on a specialist retail street running down to Barking Road, one beside a retail park with no high street at all — and neither is found by the word Newham.

See every industry we build for

Nobody searches Newham. They search Stratford, East Ham or Canning Town.

A word invented for a council merger has never been a search term. Ongoing SEO is monthly work on three agreed searches, and in this borough that always means Stratford, East Ham, Canning Town or whichever district a customer would actually name.

An illustration of the kind of local results SEO works towards. The businesses, ratings and positions shown are examples, not a ranking or a result for any particular business.

  1. 01
    “builder stratford

Stratford has two retail centres facing each other across a railway, one built round a shopping centre that opened in September 2011, and a station name that serves both and settles neither.

  2. 02
    “garage east ham

East Ham was first written down as distinct in 1204, and its trading runs the length of High Street North and High Street South, so naming the street alone still leaves a customer guessing which end.

  3. 03
    “plumber canning town

Canning Town is under long-term rebuilding around Barking Road and Rathbone Market, so addresses have genuinely changed and older directory entries send people to the wrong place.

Examples only. The three searches are agreed with you around the work you want more of and what people in your district actually type. Nobody can promise a position, and we don't.

Eighteen months, then the website is yours.

View all FAQs · All locations

Do you build websites for businesses across the whole of Newham?
Yes, across E6, E7, E12, E13, E15 and E16, from Stratford to North Woolwich. Everything is designed, built and managed remotely, so there is no office to visit.
Why do you say the borough name is not worth targeting?
Because it was invented in 1965 for the merger of West Ham and East Ham, built out of their compass points, and nothing in the borough is actually called it. There is no Newham high street and no Newham town centre — the borough genuinely has no dominant one — so the district name is the only unit a customer uses.
Several districts here share their names with other places. Does that matter?
It is the main search problem in this borough. West Ham is a club that plays in Stratford, Upton Park is a district and a station and a stadium nickname, Custom House is also a City of London landmark, North Woolwich is across the river from Woolwich, and Maryland is a US state. Each of those has a page here written specifically around that collision.
We already have a website we like. Can you just do the SEO?
No. SEO is not sold on its own any more — it is only available as part of Website + SEO, £349.99 a month in total, and that means building you a new PrimeStart website rather than adding search work onto the one you have now. A business on High Street North in East Ham or beside the Royal Docks would be starting from the same place as everyone else here: a new site built around the trade, with the SEO work running from day one rather than retrofitted onto what already exists. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
What does a Newham business website cost?
Website is £49.99 a month with a £0 upfront design fee, and it costs the same in E16 as it does in E7. The first £49.99 is taken at signup, and there is an 18-month minimum term, £899.82 in total. Once that term is complete, the website is yours.
How does ongoing SEO work?
Website + SEO is £349.99 a month total, with the website included rather than charged on top. Each month we work on three agreed local searches, for example "web designer stratford" or "builder east ham", alongside your Google Business Profile and the website itself. Nobody can promise rankings, and we don't.
Is this page the same as the Stratford or East Ham page?
No. This page is about the borough and why its invented name reaches nobody. The Stratford page is written about the Broadway and the two competing retail centres, and the East Ham page about High Street North and the 1204 record of the name. Each district has its own page.
